Liverpool were two goals down to Villarreal after just 29 minutes, and their heavily rotated attack had a difficult job on its hands.

Andoni Iraola had made six changes to his starting eleven. Rio Ngumoha, Lewis Koumas and Cody Gakpo were among the players given an opportunity, while Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola were kept out of the starting side.

For Ngumoha, another appearance was welcome. What happened over the next hour made it far more valuable.

Villarreal had taken the lead in the fourth minute when Virgil van Dijk’s misplaced header gave Georges Mikautadze an opening. Sergi Cardona then finished a counterattack to make it 2–0.

Liverpool had possession, but Villarreal were making better use of their opportunities.

The recovery began in the 36th minute. Alexis Mac Allister met Kostas Tsimikas’ corner with a header, pulling one goal back.

Just before half-time, another corner created an opening. Villarreal failed to clear the danger completely, and Ngumoha collected the ball on the left. He looked towards the far post and sent in a delivery for Ronald Araújo, who headed Liverpool level.

From 0–2 to 2–2 before the interval.

Ngumoha had provided the final pass for the equaliser, and Liverpool had found a way back into a game that was slipping away from them.

Iraola then made an adjustment that revealed something about how he wanted to use the teenager.

A change behind Ngumoha

Araújo came off at half-time, Wirtz came on, and Ryan Gravenberch moved from midfield to right-back.

Iraola explained afterwards that Villarreal had been creating numerical advantages in central areas. He needed someone capable of following those movements without leaving Liverpool exposed out wide.

Gravenberch could do that. He could also support Ngumoha when Liverpool attacked down the right.

That support mattered because Villarreal’s left-back had been pushing forward aggressively. Ngumoha was expected to help defend that side before trying to cause problems at the other end.

It was a demanding assignment for an 18-year-old.

Iraola was giving him the opportunity to attack, but the job came with responsibility. The winger needed to choose when to go forward, when to help his full-back and what to do once he had beaten his opponent.

In the 65th minute, he delivered the attacking part of that assignment.

Receiving the ball on the right, Ngumoha went at Cardona, worked his way past the defender and found Mac Allister inside the penalty area.

Mac Allister finished from close range, the ball going in off the crossbar.

Liverpool led 3–2.

Ngumoha’s first assist had come from spotting a teammate after a corner. The second came from taking responsibility himself, beating a defender and making the final pass.

Those are useful contributions in different situations. They also speak directly to the question Liverpool have been trying to answer about him.

Ngumoha has never lacked the confidence to run at opponents. His pace and willingness to take players on have been evident for some time. The next stage is making those actions count for the team.

Against Villarreal, they counted twice.

Wirtz scored Liverpool’s fourth three minutes later. Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal in the 87th minute, leaving Liverpool to protect a narrow lead before completing their 4–3 victory.

Ngumoha had already left the pitch by then, replaced by Barcola in the 74th minute. Iraola acknowledged afterwards that the youngster was tired.

That detail is worth remembering. The manager had asked him to contribute at both ends of the pitch, against an opponent capable of creating problems on his side.

He had responded with two assists and an important performance.

A bigger role, not a guaranteed place

Earlier this month, MATCHIQ examined Ngumoha’s changing position in Liverpool’s squad.

By then, he had already made enough senior appearances to move beyond the simple question of whether he could cope with first-team football. His England involvement offered further evidence that coaches were prepared to use him at senior level.

The more interesting question was what Liverpool could consistently rely on him to provide.

His England selection and playing-time record had shown growing trust without establishing a regular role.

Villarreal gave Liverpool a more concrete answer.

Ngumoha could operate from the right, take on a defender and deliver a useful final ball. He could contribute while Liverpool were chasing a game rather than merely entering when the outcome was comfortable.

There is another reason this performance matters.

Iraola said Ngumoha had been spending more time on the right recently, improving his comfort in that position and working on his ability to shoot with his left foot.

Liverpool are developing a wider range of uses for him. His performance against Villarreal showed that the work could produce something tangible.

The competition for places is still considerable.

Isak’s recent muscular problem required careful management, while Wirtz and Barcola had been dealing with a demanding schedule. Iraola did not want the latter two making a fourth start in ten days.

Those circumstances helped create Ngumoha’s opportunity.

They also make the next selection decision more interesting.

When Liverpool have their attacking options available, does Iraola choose Ngumoha because the game calls for his particular strengths?

Against Brentford three days earlier, he had already featured in a comeback, although Liverpool benefited from a numerical advantage after the opposition’s first-half red card.

Villarreal offered another kind of challenge. Ngumoha supplied two decisive passes while Liverpool were fighting to recover from a two-goal deficit.

The next test will be whether Iraola continues turning to him for that same attacking purpose when he has more choices.

For now, the teenager has done something more useful than simply collecting another appearance or breaking another age record.

He has shown his manager a way he can help Liverpool win.

And when Iraola next needs someone to create an opening from the right, Ngumoha has given him a very good reason to remember this night.
