Marli Salmon: Being 17 isn’t the story — Arteta is beginning to trust him
Max Dowman took the headlines against Ipswich.
Understandably.
Two goals at 16 tends to do that.
But another Hale End teenager may have produced a quieter signal.
Marli Salmon.
Dowman’s best moments make you stop watching and rewind.
Salmon’s best games may produce the opposite reaction:
Nothing went badly wrong.
For a 17-year-old centre-back, that’s not boring.
That’s valuable.
Salmon joined Arsenal at nine and has progressed through Hale End. Arsenal describe him as a calm, composed defender comfortable at both centre-back and full-back. He was taken on the senior pre-season tour in 2025, appeared against AC Milan and Newcastle, then made his professional debut against Club Brugge in the Champions League later that year. Arsenal

Arsenal’s defensive availability helped create the opportunity. Ben White was injured, while other defenders had fitness or workload considerations. So one League Cup start should not be mistaken for a permanent hierarchy change. The Sun
MATCHIQ’s current classification is therefore:
Conditional First-Team Trust.
Not a regular.
Not a Saliba successor.
Not yet.
But no longer merely an academy defender either.
The next test is whether the trust survives when Arteta has more senior defenders available.
That’s when this story becomes much more interesting.
Dowman is creating selection pressure.
Salmon is accumulating trust.
Different pathways.

When does potential stop being about the future and begin affecting Arsenal’s decisions today?
